Nigerian man arraigned before Dubai court for attempting to withdraw money from another man’s bank account

An unemployed Nigerian man was on Monday, January 18, brought before Dubai Criminal Court for trying to withdraw more than Dh500,000 from another man’s bank account using an Emirates ID card.

In court, he admitted using an Emirates ID card belonging to someone else, forging the bank account withdrawal slip by signing it and adding his personal details, using the forged slip, and attempting to fraudulently obtain Dh580,000.

The ID card which belonged to a man from Kenya who lost his wallet in March last year.

In return, he would be paid Dh50,000, the friend told him. The fraud was thwarted when a bank employee spotted the difference between the Nigerian and the photo on the ID card.

Georgia state lottery winner murdered in home invasion

20 year old Craigory Burch Jr, who won $434,272 (£305,000) in the Georgia state lottery Fantasy5 draw in November has been murdered during a robbery at his home.

On Thursday night, armed raiders broken into Burch’s home, where he was with his girlfriend and children, WALB reported.

The three masked robbers burst into the property and held Burch at gunpoint and demanded his wallet, girlfriend Jasmine Hendricks said.

She told the local station:

“When they came in, he said, ‘don’t do it bro. Don’t do it in front of my kids. Please don’t do it in front of my kids and old lady’.
“He said I’ll give you my bank card.”

Burch is then believed to have thrown his trousers at the gunmen, who rummaged through the pockets looking for his wallet.

When they failed to find it, they reportedly shot and killed him before fleeing.

Hendricks fled and raised the alarm, she told the station.

Police are still hunting the suspect.

Javier Mascherano sentenced to jail over tax evasion

Javier Mascherano has been sentenced to a year in prison after a verdict was reached in his tax evasion case.

The Argentine has been fined €815,000 and handed a year’s sentence for two counts of fiscal crimes committed in 2011 and 2012.

However, the court is expected to grant the wish of Mascherano and his lawyer, David Aineto, in suspending the custodial sentence in exchange for a further fine.

The Barcelona star said in a statement released on Thursday:

Today I have reached an agreement with the Spanish tax authorities, with a firm verdict agreed by all parties. Thus, with a resolution now for the legal matters and with the relief of having sorted my tax situation, I would like to make a brief statement.
After agreeing my move to Barcelona I contracted a specialist tax agency with well-known professionals that enjoy a great reputation.

According to my situation they recommended me certain structures, all within the law, telling me that they were normal, transparent and accepted procedures.

I was assessed by these professionals from 2010 to 2014 I decided to change agency because of the proceedings I was facing, and with evidence that the problems may not be ‘potential’ but in fact very real.

My new agency recommended that I pay the tax authorities the money they were claiming, presenting also a corrective payment.

Now, finally, after a long wait this agreement has arrived which allows me to relax again and go about my daily life.

I’m a professional sportsman and I don’t know a lot about legal and financial matters.
Therefore I must rely on the people that manage these technical, and for me, complicated, issues.

All my career I have been an honest and responsible person…

I will take this experience that has accosted me as another experience which I will leave stronger and calmed by the fact that I am once again within the law.

South Korean man acquitted for following North Korea on twitter

A 73-year-old South Korean man was accused of distributing pro-North Korea propaganda after he followed the country’s official account on the social network.

But because Lee didn’t retweet any posts, he was found not guilty of sharing or distributing North Korean content and was acquitted, The Guardian reports.

However, The Korea Times reports Lee was sentenced to a year in jail for praising the North on his blog years ago.

Doctor Turns Himself In To Police After Allegedly Ejaculating On Female Patient

A Mount Sinai doctor is now facing three count charge of sexual abuse and sex assault after a female patient accused him of ejaculating in her face.

The incident occurred on January 11 when the unidentified woman went to the Mount Sinai Hospital emergency room complaining of pain in her shoulder.

The woman told police she was taken to a private room inside the ER where a nurse gave her two pain pills and a cortisone injection for inflammation.

When the patient complained of more pain, the nurse administered a Morphine injection.

The woman was then told to change into a gown for X-rays of her shoulder. After the X-ray, Dr. Newman walked into the room and said,

“I’m going to give you a shot of morphine.”

The woman said she told Newman that a nurse had already given her an injection of Morphine.

She said she felt a burning sensation, indicating that the doctor had injected the narcotic into an IV in her arm.

After she told Newman she felt pain on the right side of her chest, the doctor allegedly began fondling her breasts.

She told police Newman rolled her bed away from the wall and positioned himself with his back to her.

The woman claimed she was so heavily sedated that she couldn’t move.
She told police she heard distinct fapping sounds and then she felt semen on her face.

The doctor allegedly used a blanket to clean her face.
When the effects of the sedation wore off, the woman said she went into the bathroom and cleaned the semen off her gown.

She collected the gown and soiled bedding in a plastic bag as evidence.

Manhattan prosecutors are awaiting DNA tests before deciding whether to charge Dr. Newman.

His daughter Cirlene Souza, aged 30 which would mean if his age was right that Joao was 101 when she was born, told one paper:

“He has days when he is lucid but others when he doesn’t even recognise his children.
“He was very small when he came to work in Acre extracting rubber. “He has been with my mum for more than 40 years and depends on others for everything.”

Responding to doubts about her dad’s age, she added:

“You hear everything, people that criticise and say it’s a lie and others that admire the fact someone can live so long.
“It’s sometimes offends me because everything is documented and the documents have already been examined by experts at to see if they’d been falsified and nothing abnormal was found.”Cirlene said Joao suffered a stroke six years ago but continued to eat three times a day.
His favourite dishes are rice, fish and meat and the only thing he turns his nose up at is a local bean-based dish called feijao.

The Guinness Book of Records recognises 112-year-old Yasutaro Koide from Japan as the oldest person alive.

And Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who died aged 122 in 1997, holds the record for the world’s longest living person.

Court denies FG power to seize MTN’s funds in Nigerian banks

The Federal High Court in Lagos headed by Justice Mohammed Idris has denied the Federal Government powers to seize all funds owned by MTN Nigeria Communications Limited in Nigerian banks, pending when the telecommunication company pays up the N1.4 trillion fine leveled against it by the NCC over its failure to deactivate unregistered sim cards.

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), through his counsel, Dipo Okpeseyi (SAN), had in a motion filed before the court, expressed fears of MTN moving all its funds in Nigeria, since it was in their habit to do so.

According to the court paper, MTN had between October 2007 and May 2009 moved over $7.7bn of the money made in Nigeria to a foreign account. The telecommunications company had also on February 8, 2008, moved over $936m out of Nigerian banks to their foreign accounts.

“Unless this honourable court urgently entertains this application, the plaintiff/respondent would move its funds out of Nigeria, being the jurisdiction of this honourable court, and thereby frustrate the enforcement of the fine in the likely event that this honourable court sanctions the imposition of the fine,” counsel to the AGF said.

However in his ruling, the presiding judge, Justice denied the Federal governments application, stating that it had not provided any evidence showing that MTN was indeed moving its funds out of Nigerian banks. He said hearing on the case filed against the Federal government challenging the N1.4 trillion fine is more important and of public interest and will need to be heard soon so judgement can be delivered.

He adjourned the case to January 22nd.

The delighted player disclosed that his wife was unhurt while in the kidnappers’ den but will undergo medical examinations.

“Yes, she is alright but I have to ensure that she is. I have taken her to the hospital for proper medical tests and checkup because the kind of ordeal she must have gone through in the hands of the armed men is nothing to be taken for granted. I have to be sure that she is very okay.
“She was taken to a very bad place, a swampy forest, a dirty place to be kept for almost a week. Imagine what she must have faced during the number of days she was kept there. But I am thanking God that I got her back alive. It is her life that’s the most important thing to me.

COMMENDS AFRICAN UNION’s SINGLE PASSPORT

The International Committee of The All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) has commended the African Union (AU) for the launch of a single, common electronic passport (e-Passport) for all Africans at the just concluded 27th AU Summit, in Kigali, Rwanda.

It also applauded the ultimate goal of the single passport which is set to realise the dream of visa-free travel for African citizens within the African continent by 2020.

In the same vein, the AU’s single, common electronic passport throughout the continent falls squarely within the framework of Africa’s Agenda 2063 and has the specific aim of facilitating free movement of persons, goods and services around the continent in order to foster intra-Africa trade, integration and socio-economic development.

Reacting to this development, President/ Executive Producer, AFRIMA, Mike Dada, said, “The African Union’s plan to allowing free movement of citizens within the African continent is a stepping stone towards building stronger unity among African nations and this is what we at the International Committee of AFRIMA have been canvassing and propagating for years in line with the AFRIMA’s vision.

“For us in AFRIMA, it is a strong step towards making every African citizen to think and act beyond national identities and identify themselves as citizens of the African continent with a sense of pride that, ‘I am an African.’

“We have found that it is easier to travel to Europe and America from Africa than Africans travelling within Africa. Yearly, we face a big hurdle in visa processing, direct flights and protocol to bring in over 880 nominees/superstars and their guests, 150 production crew members, international media and over 2000 international invited guests to the AFRIMA Awards ceremony annually.”

“The single passport will also ease and facilitate one of the AFRIMA objectives which is to engage all the stakeholders who are critical to the awards process to give them a platform for knowledge sharing and capacity-building on the continent. AFRIMA has embarked and organised stakeholders’ engagements and press conferences in over 25 African countries in the five regions of Africa. This we will do until we cover the 54 member states,” he concluded.

In partnership with the African Union Commission, AUC, The All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, is a continental music and cultural initiative developed to celebrate, reward and showcase the rich musical heritage of Africa, stimulate conversations among Africans and between Africa and the rest of the globe about the great potential and values of the African culture and artistic legacy for the purpose of creating jobs, reducing poverty, calling attention of world leaders to Africa and promoting the positive image of Africa to the world.

In line with the AFRIMA 3.0 calendar, submission of entries closes on July 30, 2016. There are 34 award categories open to music artistes, producers, video directors, songwriters and music/entertainment journalists as well as the hitherto unheralded music professionals.

The spectacular 2016 awards ceremony will be hosted in Nigeria in November 4-6. This will be preceded by the AFRIMA Music Village and Africa Music Summit

Two BASE jumpers drown in Big Sur tragedy

A BASE jumper who parachuted off a bridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean likely drowned, as did the man who heroically jumped in to try and save her, according to police.

The two thrill-seekers have been missing in the Big Sur area since Saturday morning.
Monterey County Sheriff’s officials say a video from a helmet camera shows Mary Katherine ‘Katie’ Connell, of Ventura, descending nearly 300 feet and landing on Bixby Creek, which feeds into the Pacific.
Shortly after the landing, three large waves overtake her and she vanishes from view, presumably having been dragged out to sea.
Sheriff Steve Bernal says her companion, identified as a BASE jumping instructor from Finland, then leaped off the bridge to help her, reported the stationKION.
While the male victim’s name was being withheld by the authorities pending the notification of next of kin, it is believed that the man who attempted to save Katie Connell was Rami Kajala.

According to his Facebook page, Kajala, a Finnish national, was a BASE jumping instructor and flight suit designer who was friends with Ms Connell.

His final status update, dated January 13, featured more than a half-dozen photos of the young woman jumping from a cliff in Perris, California, in one of Kajala’s custom-made ‘tracking’ suits.

According to his website and his social media postings, Kajala had been BASE jumping since 2003 and had 2,500 jumps to his name. In 2013, he started the company RavenBase.com, which manufactures and sells tracking suits designed to fly.
‘BASE’ is a term that stands for four categories of fixed objects from which one can jump: building, antenna, span and Earth.
Practitioners of the extreme sport parachute or wingsuit-fly from man-made structures or cliffs.

Kajala, who referred to himself as a ‘master jedi tracker,’ operated a BASE jumping school offering courses in the art of tracking.
